Chapter 1403
Chapter 1403:
“I had promised her I would wait, whether it took a year or ten years. I was prepared to wait as long as needed to be with her.”
Lucius watched Harlee carefully and then gave a self-deprecating smile.
“You probably think Nicola was just appeasing me with her drunken words.”
That was precisely what Harlee had in mind.
“Nicola never really loved anyone. To her, both you and Nathaniel were like younger brothers.”
Lucius quickly retorted, “That’s not true! My relationship with Nicola was different. If Nathaniel hadn’t unexpectedly caused complications, she would have come back to the country to marry me!”
Right then, Harlee found herself missing Rhys terribly. She was certain that if he were present, he’d coldly dismiss Lucius’ wild fantasies with a scoff.
Harlee didn’t feel like listening any further. It seemed clear to her that Lucius was merely indulging in a delusion, convinced that Nicola had reciprocated his feelings and that they might have ended up together if Nathaniel hadn’t intervened.
With these thoughts, Harlee’s eyes narrowed, and she asked, “Did Nathaniel play a role in Nicola’s death? What exactly did he do?” She sensed this might be the crucial clue.
“Yes, he was behind Nicola’s death!” Lucius’ voice grew louder, his expression turning grave.
“Harlee, you’ve ended up marrying the grandson of the man who caused Nicola’s death!”
Left speechless, Harlee couldn’t comprehend. Nathaniel was oblivious to Nicola’s situation on the deserted island. How could he be responsible for her death? Furthermore, Lucius repeatedly accused Nathaniel of murdering Nicola without detailing how. She would have to be gullible to take Lucius’ word for it. Honestly, if it weren’t for the kindness Lucius had always extended to her, she might have thought him crazy.

Observing her dumbfounded look, Lucius mistakenly believed she accepted his accusation that Nathaniel had killed Nicola, and he stood up with a taunting sneer.
“Silent now? What? Do you finally believe me? You disregarded my warnings about marrying Rhys. Feeling any regrets yet?”
“Seriously, you’re making wild assumptions,” Harlee retorted, rolling her eyes.
“You insist that Nathaniel murdered Nicola. Then explain why my father, who was closer to Nicola than any of you, showed no concern whatsoever?”
Harlee momentarily felt compelled to reveal the truth of Nicola’s death, but looking at Lucius’ stubborn face, she suddenly lost the urge to correct him. There was no point. Over the past decades, if Lucius had simply taken the time to investigate, he would have discovered that Nicola hadn’t died. She had merely gone into hiding. Yet, he never did. He was too busy casting blame and isolating himself. Did Lucius truly love Nicola? It didn’t appear so.
Harlee suspected that Lucius would react with anger and become even more agitated when confronted, which might allow her to extract more information about Nola by continuously provoking him.
However, that reaction never came.
The usually articulate Lucius suddenly became withdrawn. He stood up and moved toward the door, saying, “Let’s pause this discussion for today. I’ll share more about the older generation another time.”noveldrama
As he reached the door, he paused and turned back to Harlee.
“Don’t think about escaping. The poison in your system won’t harm your unborn child, but without the necessary medication or antidote, you risk a miscarriage. And don’t attempt to reach out to Rhys. If I detect any suspicious activity, your child will suffer the consequences with you!” His tone was cold, devoid of any warmth.
Shock painted Harlee’s face. Since her abduction, Lucius’ behavior hadn’t shifted dramatically. This sudden cold indifference, showing no concern for her life or death, shifted her feelings from discomfort to deep hurt in an instant. So, the kindness of years was nothing but a facade.
Witnessing her stunned reaction, Lucius exited the room rigidly, locking the door behind him with a definitive click. How could decades of his kindness toward Harlee be fake? It was just that between Nicola and her, he cared more about Nicola.
