Chapter 124 'Déad' Ex-husband

'But you've studied biochemistry, right?' Darya said. 'You are the ultimate genius

in this field. With you there, Solaro and Zenith won't be able to pull the wool over our eyes.'

Brion contemplated the idea.

'Please?' Darya pleaded. 'You don't actually have to do the research part. Just be there to keep an eye on things.'noveldrama

'A month?'

'A month. You can cut it short if you want, or extend it if you find the project to be interesting. It's all up to you.'

Brion nodded. 'Okay.'

'Great! Thanks, my dear brother. I could kiss you right now if I'm not driving.'

'Both hands on the wheel and eyes straight ahead, please, Brion said in a flat voice. 'I don't want to spend my

first day of vacation in a hospital room. Or worse, in the morgue.'

Darya laughed. 'Hey, you are getting better at the art of joke-telling! Dad and Avery and Callan are gonna be

thrilled!'

Right after she drove out of the airport carpark, she had to stop and find the nearest gas station as the fuel gauge needle was pointing dangerously close to 'Empty.'

'I know, I know,' Darya said before Brion could comment. 'I forgot to check the gas tank last night. I haven't

driven this car in a while.'

She spotted a Shell gas station to the left. 'Got it.'

After the car turned into the gas station, she got out to work the fuel pump herself.

Brion exited the car and stretched.

Darya had her back to the convenience store attached to the station and hence didn't see two pairs of eyes fixed on her as two figures stepped out of the store.

Ryan nudged Micah. 'Talk about a coincidence! Isn't that Darya?'

And who was that good-looking man standing next to her?

Ryan caught a glimpse of Darya's profile, her slightly curly locks cascading down her shoulders.

She looked very pretty, clad in a sleek black spaghetti-strap dress and elegant high heels.

And her smile and languid charm were directed at the enigmatic man by her side. Micah found himself drawn closer, eavesdropping on their conversation.

'So, you are single now?' Brion asked. 'I remember vaguely that you were thrilled to be married.'

He wasn't in the country when Darya insisted on leaving home and marrying Micah, but he did receive a flurry of calls from his father and brothers, urging him to talk Darya out of the 'diculous idea.'

'The man's dead,' Darya replied casually.

'The man?'

'My ex-husband.'

'So you are not divorced, but widowed?' Brion asked.

'I guess you could say that.' Darya shrugged. 'But it amounts to the same thing- I'm single, unattached now.

Free to do whatever I like.'

'O.,' Brion nodded, his emotions hidden beneath a stoic facade. 'Though, it's not quite true that you can do whatever you like. For example, you can't travel back in time.'

'I wish I could.' Darya sighed. 'Then I could go back and undo the boneheaded decision to marry that man.'

'Maybe that's not entirely impossible in the future,' Brion said. 'Some physicists have proposed the idea that quantum entanglement could be a potential mechanism for manipulating time. I read this paper recently-

Darya covered her ears. 'No papers! No theories, please! I don't want to spend the rest of the car ride talking about quantum entanglement.'

Micah and Ryan froze in their tracks.

Micah, the ex-husband who supposedly had already met his demise, was at a loss for words.

His gaze remained fixated on Darya, who seemed oblivious to his presence. Ryan chuckled, patting Micah's shoulder. 'Quit staring, man. You're dead to her.'

He rubbed his chin. 'Say, don't you think that man looks familiar? I think I saw his face somewhere before..."

He pulled out his phone, tapped something, and then let out a low whistle. 'Look! That's him!'

Micah saw what was on Ryan's phone screen, his expression mirroring Ryan's astonishment.

They both stood there, dumbfounded.

On the screen was an article, interviewing the winner of the prestigious award of 'Breakthrough Scientist of the Year,' Dr Brion Miller.

'It says here he's a biochemist,' Ryan said. 'And he's teaching at Lorendale

University in Cordelia. What's he doing in Hagen?'

Micah said nothing.

He was wondering the same thing.

'The two of them seem familiar with each other,' Ryan said. 'Do you think they are

a couple?'

'No. Maybe she's just looking to hire him. For the Solaro project.'

Micah would rather believe this to be the case than the alternative Ryan suggested.

'Should we go say hello?' Ryan asked.

Micah shook his head.

He stood where he was and watched Darya get in the car with Brion and drive

away.

Half an hour later, the car pulled up outside the McAllister mansion.

Before they even stepped out of the car, they heard the loud noise of a lawnmower in the back garden.

When it paused, they could hear Callan's wails and Matthias's furious shouts coming from within the house.

'It's just a vase!' Callan said. 'I'll buy you a new one!'

'It's my favourite vase! One of a kind!'

'I didn't break it on purpose!'

'This is the living

not an ice skating rink! Who told you to skate indoors!'

'I was just trying on the new skates!'

Brion stood at the gate, looking at Darya. 'Help me find a quiet house, preferably

without neighbours around."

Darya blinked and blurted out without thinking, 'How about a haunted house?'

'Sure, why not?'

As long as there was no one else around.

'I was just joking,' said Darya. 'You should stay here. Dad misses you a lot. As for Callan, he has his own apartment.'

She pushed open the door, and Callan rushed toward them, nearly knocking her

over. 'Finally, you're back! You said you'd take me to the airport to pick up Brion!'

'But you overslept,' Darya said. 'I tried to wake you.'
