Chapter 934 Watching a Movie
Chapter 934: Chapter 934 Watching a Movie
In the quiet of dawn,
she suddenly realized intimacy has many facets. It’s not just about physical relationships but also includes leisurely companionship and sharing everyday routines.
They were the closest of lovers and friends. Though it was just the two of them, simply looking at him made her happy.
While he was getting dressed, he noticed her briskly combing her hair a few times, and it instantly returned to its neat and orderly state.
Sleek, smooth, and perfectly in place.
It seemed almost magical.
Even such a small, subtle motion could make him feel warmth and intimacy.
As if all this was the thread that connected them.
Her slender figure moved and bent gracefully, responding with her motions, completely capturing his gaze.
Good heavens, she was truly beautiful.
Bai Xiao kept herself busy all morning. The kitchen hadn’t been tidied up for a while, so she cleaned the stove, washed the refrigerator, scrubbed off layers of grime from the countertops, and organized the vegetables and fruits that An Zhiyuan had bought from the market. Clearly, she no longer had the time to do these things herself.
An Zhiyuan watched her busy figure, clad in an apron and bustling about everywhere, his heart filled with happiness.
He stood at the kitchen door, looking at the woman inside, and for some reason, he felt like crying.
Turns out he truly loved her to pieces; otherwise, why would his heart ache this much?
Bai Xiao made poached sliced beef in chili sauce, because both of them loved spicy food.
There was also a chilled shredded chicken salad and stir-fried eggs with tomatoes.
Watching An Zhiyuan finish two large bowls of rice and all the dishes, she couldn’t help but marvel at how much of a big eater her man was.
Later, he took her out to see a movie.
It was a promise he hadn’t fulfilled yesterday.
A lot of couples and children came to watch the movie, and the theater was almost packed. Bai Xiao glanced at the movie’s title and finally understood why.
It was the classic, "Mama, Love Me One More Time," a film that had taken the era by storm, shedding countless tears and earning widespread acclaim. No wonder there were so many people.
The line for tickets was practically a sea of people.
Back in the 1980s, movie theaters were popular entertainment venues. People with limited leisure options had a special fondness for films.
Of course, televisions had already entered households! But not every family could afford one at the time, and movie tickets were still affordable. For ordinary laboring-class families earning tens, or even a hundred yuan a month, a 20-cent movie ticket was a cheap indulgence.
Whether it was dating or family recreation, these were expenses most could afford. What’s more, there were countless discounts available then—kids often got free admission, which meant families with three or four children could enjoy a movie with one ticket. It was vastly different from how theaters operate now.
Swept along by the crowd, the two squeezed into the theater. An Zhiyuan shielded Bai Xiao by wrapping his arm around her to protect her from the throng, and they finally found their seats after much shuffling. The seats were good, right in the middle. However, next to them sat a couple with three kids. One was being held, another was seated, and the third was occupying one of their shared seats.
An Zhiyuan checked their ticket numbers and politely said to the couple, "Comrade, these seats belong to us."
Back then, seating was strictly assigned, or else standing was the only option.
The wife glanced at An Zhiyuan and Bai Xiao, especially at An Zhiyuan’s clothes, and grumbled discontentedly as she lifted the child off the seat, muttering under her breath, "Don’t know about learning from Lei Feng’s example, really, don’t know how to serve the people! We are the people, after all."
Her husband pulled her aside, moved the older child from his arms to the ground, took the child from his wife’s embrace, and grumbled awkwardly, "You’re the one who insisted on coming to the movie. Look how crowded it is! Isn’t this suffering for no reason?"
An Zhiyuan sat down next to the wife, leaving the other seat for Bai Xiao. Clearly, this upset the wife further. noveldrama
She had initially hoped Bai Xiao would sit on her side, so that if her kids started crying, she could sweet-talk her into letting the child share a seat. Sitting between two women would be easier to manage.
Unexpectedly, this Brother Solider decided to sit there instead. What was he doing here, ruining her plans?
But she couldn’t say anything.
Agitated, she snapped at her husband, "As if I’m the only one who wanted to come! It’s these three little troublemakers throwing a fit about it! You think you can bring three of them by yourself to see a movie? I’m busy all day long, and it’s only during the break that I managed to drag you along. Otherwise, the three of them would have driven me up the wall."
Bai Xiao sat down and turned her face sideways to look at An Zhiyuan on his seat. The already narrow chairs appeared even more cramped, especially because of his tall, lanky frame. His long legs seemed awkwardly squashed in the narrow aisle, particularly with the wife deliberately squeezing her child toward his seat. An Zhiyuan tried to edge his body away, but it was clearly a struggle. Sensing her gaze, he softly tugged at the corner of his mouth in reassurance.
She stood up, "Let’s switch seats. I’ll sit over there instead!"
Seeing him uncomfortable made her heart ache. An Zhiyuan had purposely sat there just to shield her.
The wife’s expression noticeably shifted upon hearing this.
An Zhiyuan firmly grabbed her arm and pressed her back into the seat.
"No need! Sit tight and enjoy the movie; it’s already started."
Sure enough, the theater lights dimmed, and the sounds of the crowd gradually quieted in the darkness, except for the occasional cry from a child.
The movie viewing experience was far from comfortable. The wife next to him, whether intentionally or not, allowed her children to repeatedly lean against An Zhiyuan throughout the film. It seemed she had no intention of moving them away. An Zhiyuan watched the entire movie with his body tilted awkwardly.
Being so close to him, Bai Xiao could smell the faint mix of tobacco, soap, and his masculine scent. It made her face flush uncontrollably. Her attention seemed to drift away from the film, her gaze settling on An Zhiyuan the entire time, while he was wholly engrossed in watching the movie.
The movie finally ended.
As they followed the crowd out, due to the tight passageway at the exit, Bai Xiao almost stumbled. She instinctively reached out to steady herself on a chair.
Unfortunately, there was a step in front, and someone behind bumped into her heavily. Her foot slipped, but just in time, a pair of hands steadied her waist. By the time Bai Xiao regained her balance and came to her senses, she realized she was entirely enveloped in An Zhiyuan’s embrace. His right hand naturally supported her waist.
His arm acted like a shield, deflecting the oncoming crowd for her. Finally, the two managed to exit the theater.
Breathing fresh air, they exchanged smiles.
Turns out watching a movie wasn’t as romantic as they had imagined.
The quiet stroll as they slowly walked home felt much more peaceful and romantic.
Just keep walking like this, slowly staying by your side as we grow old together.
