Chapter 368 Sympathy
Luna was lost in her thoughts while Leo and Emily kept talking.
To calm Leo down, Emily took the two necklaces and examined them herself.
Luna had been ruthless. Since Leo had found she stole the necklaces, she decided not to bother selling them and just destroyed them all.
The necklaces had been yanked apart, with identical breaks. Fixing them wouldn't be easy, but Emily thought she might give it a shot.
"Mr. Ward, let me handle these two necklaces. I'll see what I can do to fix them. But the store's prized possession..."
JM Jewelry's prized possession wasn't entirely Emily's work. She had only been part of the design team, and her name was attached to it. So fixing this necklace required Penelope.
But Penelope was currently abroad on business.
With no other option, Emily had to explain the situation to Leo as gently as possible.
Leo understood Emily's implication and felt a deep sense of regret. He could have protected the necklace, which he had planned to give to Vanessa when he saw her.
But now?
Luna had ruined everything.
Thinking about this, Leo shot a fierce glare at Luna, scaring her into silence, not even daring to sob.
"Alright, I'll wait for Penelope to return."
"Thank you, Emily. Please do your best to restore these necklaces."
With that, Leo stood up, ready to see Emily out and then deal with Luna.
But unexpectedly, a dark figure stormed in from outside.
It was Roger.
Seeing him, Emily held her breath, not daring to speak.
Roger couldn't believe that in just a few days away from home, his own daughter had been tormented like this. He couldn't blame Leo, so he directed all his anger at Emily.
"Emily? Why is it always you? You're really the nemesis of the Ward family, aren't you? What, here to avenge Michael?" Roger rolled up his sleeves and moved towards Emily.
But Leo quickly stepped in front of her, glaring at Roger.
In the standoff between father and son, Roger backed down.
Roger had just returned home and couldn't believe Leo would side with an outsider, especially the daughter-in-law of the Smith family.
Not understanding the situation, he mustered the courage to shout at Leo, "Dad, what are you doing!"
Leo, equally furious, retorted, "I should be asking you that! Emily is a guest I invited! If you want to stand up for your daughter, first find out what really happened!"
Roger, reminded by Leo, turned to Luna. Luna, feeling guilty, avoided his gaze. Frustrated, Roger turned to Alice, his face stern. "What happened!"
Alice, trembling, managed to speak.
Emily watched, realizing that the lives of the wealthy weren't as enviable as they seemed.
When Emily first met Alice, she thought the rich girl had a different, more privileged life. And there was Veda. Despite their different personalities, they both seemed to have an innate sense of ease.
Emily could never have that ease.
From a young age, she had to deal with her parents' divorce, her father's betrayal, and
the mistress and illegitimate child taking over. She had to fight for her interests her whole life, unlike them, who had everything handed to them.
Once, Emily envied them.
But now, she saw there was nothing to envy.
They had to endure mental pressure, family exploitation, helplessness, and powerlessness.
Unconsciously, Emily felt a bit of sympathy for them.
Alice stammered, "It was... it was Luna. Luna snuck into Grandpa's study and stole the two necklaces designed by Miss Brown. Luna thought they were bribes from Miss Brown, but they were actually gifts from Grandpa to us."noveldrama
Leo added, "Luna really messed up! I planned to give her something, but she ruined it! And now she's crying! What for!
"And your sister Vanessa, I just got news from the orphanage that Vanessa was found. I was at the JM Jewelry exhibition, so I bought a gift for Vanessa! Ask your daughter what she planned to do with the gift I bought for Vanessa!" Leo was furious.
Luna could only cry louder, showing she knew she was wrong.
Emily felt stuck in the middle.
She hadn't been much help, and now that she had comforted Leo, she could have left
with the necklaces. But Roger's return complicated things.
Leo's words made it clear that Emily wasn't to blame.
But Roger hated the Smith family, hated Michael, and anyone associated with him.
Seeing Emily in his home, he couldn't let her go easily.
"Mr. Ward, I think I should head home. My mother is waiting for me. I'll fix these necklaces and bring them back to you."
Emily intended to leave.
But seeing it was late and dangerous, Leo suggested Harlan escort her.
Roger saw an opportunity and signaled to his men, who understood and followed
Emily and Harlan out of the Ward Mansion.
Outside, Emily felt a weight lift off her shoulders.
She couldn't believe the terrifying scene she had just witnessed.
The Ward family was a deeply entrenched, old-fashioned wealthy family. Compared to
them, the Smith family seemed like paradise.
Thinking of this, Emily couldn't help but understand Alice better.
She even felt sympathy for what Alice and Bryan would face in the future.
"Miss Brown, please get in the car. I'll take you home."
Harlan's voice broke Emily's thoughts.
She turned and saw a dark figure behind Harlan.
Emily didn't know who it was, but she had a bad feeling.
What do you think?
