Chapter 15
Time flew by, and the weekend passed in the blink of an eye. Monday morning soon arrived.
Zachary and Anya left the house together, but they didn't head straight to the office.
Before they set off, Zachary had sent Wendy a text, reminding her not to forget their appointment at the courthouse to finalize their divorce.
Just after he sent the message, Anya unexpectedly pulled the car to a stop by the side of the road.
Zachary turned to look at her, confused, as she unbuckled her seatbelt. Anya raised her eyebrows, motioning for him to get out of the car.
She huffed, rolling her eyes. "Come on, Mr. Lloyd, a little cooperation would be nice. Get out already!"
Seeing his blank stare, Anya clicked her tongue in mild annoyance. She said, "If you want the horse to run, you have to feed it first, right?"
Zachary had no choice but to follow her out of the car. They had stopped in front of a place called "Taco House".
Once inside, Anya walked up to the cashier and ordered two servings of beef tacos, one of them with extra spice.
Zachary didn't give it much thought, assuming that Anya liked spicy food. But when the order came, Anya pushed the spicier plate toward him.
"How did you know I like spicy food?" Zachary asked, a bit surprised.
Anya said casually between small bites of her taco, "I'm not blind. You barely put chili in the dishes you cooked, but each time, you were the one who ate all of it."
A warmth spread through Zachary's chest. Wendy had never noticed that he liked spicy food, but Anya had picked up on it almost immediately. She had even remembered.
Zachary had always loved spicy food, and practically lived for it, but because Wendy couldn't handle spicy dishes, he'd rarely used chili while cooking, except when absolutely necessary.
During their five years of marriage, he had gone out of his way to accommodate Wendy's preferences, sometimes even forgetting his own.
This often led Wendy to tease him, asking how he could possibly not have anything he liked.
But in truth, it wasn't that he liked nothing. It was just that he chose not to show it, or deliberately hid it for the sake of someone else.
Zachary wasn't a fan of tacos, but this taco place Anya had found served food so good that he ended up finishing his entire plate of extra-spicy beef tacos.
Anya asked with a smug grin, "Well? Pretty good, huh?"
She had only eaten half of her taco, but she'd picked out all the beef. Clearly, she had a particular fondness for it.
Zachary smiled and nodded. "Yeah. It was really good. I liked it."
Just then, Anya pulled two napkins from the dispenser. She extended her hand, and Zachary instinctively reached out to take them.
But before he could, Anya used one of the napkins to wipe the sauce from the corner of his mouth. The casual, almost intimate gesture took Zachary by surprise.
By the time he registered what was happening, Anya had already pulled her hand away. She rested her chin on her palms, her bright eyes watching him with an amused glint.
Zachary felt his face grow warm but tried to maintain his composure. He muttered, trying to sound stern, "You shouldn't do that. People might get the wrong idea."
"Wrong idea about what?" Anya asked, her eyes twinkling.
Zachary replied, "You're not in a relationship. If someone with bad intentions saw that and snapped a photo, it might make things harder for you in the future."
Anya chuckled, a sly smile spreading across her face. "That'd be perfect!"
Her response left Zachary speechless. He could see it now. This CEO, who was so cold and commanding at work, was an absolute joker outside the office.
Suddenly, the notification tone of a message rang out. Zachary pulled out his phone to check. It was from Wendy.
The contents, however, left him simmering with anger.
Wendy texted him that said,
"Zachary, you think you can just say 'divorce' and that's it? Why should agree? Since you've been unfaithful to me t'll make sure you understand what it feels like to be betrayed by your own wife!"
After reading the message, the good mood he had just moments ago instantly soured. Unfaithful? She had the nerve to accuse him of being unfaithful?
The reality was that it was Wendy who had betrayed their relationship. Now, she was twisting things, making it look like he was the one to blame. What was she trying to do?
Noticing his sudden change in expression, Anya cautiously probed, "Did your ex- wife bully you again?"
Zachary looked up, confusion in his eyes. "Why do you assume she's bullying me?"
Anya started to say something, her tone more serious than usual, "Mr. Lloyd, before I answer that, you need to promise me you won't get mad, no matter what I say."noveldrama
"Alright. I won't get mad. Say what you want." Zachary replied.
Anya hesitated for a second before blurting out, "Mr. Lloyd, don't you realize... you're kind of like a pushover?"
Zachary was stunned into silence.
Thinking she might have gone too far, Anya quickly tried to explain herself. "Mr. Lloyd, don't get me wrong-"
"I'm not misunderstanding you," Zachary interrupted, rubbing his temple in exasperation. "And honestly, you're making it worse by explaining yourself."
She was the CEO of the company, a woman hailed as a goddess by countless men in the city. Yet, her thoughts were often anything but sophisticated.
Anya coughed awkwardly, a rare blush tinging her fair cheeks. "Mr. Lloyd, should we still go to the courthouse later?"
Zachary replied after some thought, "No need for now. Let's head to the office first. When you have time, help me get the paperwork ready to file for a divorce lawsuit. I'm not really familiar with the process, so I'll have to trouble you with it."
"Sure thing, Mr. Lloyd!" Anya said, nodding. She stood up to pay for their meal before they both got back into the car and headed to Yel Corporation.
Over the weekend, Zachary had thoroughly reviewed the company's client information. So, when an issue arose with a major client that required someone to smooth things over, he volunteered without hesitation.
The business department manager was pleased with Zachary's proactive attitude.
He patted Zachary on the shoulder and handed him a file. He said, "Zac, the client
is having a birthday celebration tonight at Starry Sky Nightclub at 10:00 p.m.
"I managed to snag an invitation, so I need you to be there and make sure they're happy. The fault this time lies with our company, so your job is to pacify them and ensure that the collaboration continues smoothly."
Zachary nodded and replied, "Understood. I'll do my best."
"That's good. I appreciate the hard work!" The manager chuckled and returned to his office.
Zachary opened the file, scanning through the client's information, until he froze at
a familiar name.
"Ellen Stewart?" His brows furrowed.
Ellen was Wendy's best friend, a pretty and well-off socialite. Her family primarily worked in the garment industry. They owned three clothing factories and had assets worth tens of millions.
Three years ago, Ellen had fallen out with Wendy over Zachary. The reason? One night, while drunk, Ellen had tried to kiss Zachary and seduce him.
He rejected her advances and reported the incident to Wendy. In a fit of anger, Wendy ended her friendship with Ellen. They hadn't spoken since.
"This task... isn't going to be easy," Zachary muttered, pinching the bridge of his
nose.
But there was no going back, so he had no choice but to face it head-on.
What do you think?
