Chapter 46
Lucas had already noticed when Evelyn started looking uneasy beside him.
She kept looking at him and glancing away immediately.
He turned to her slowly and asked, "How's the new company treating you?"
She pressed her lips together. "Not bad, actually. I like my current job."
"Seems like it was the right call to leave. You didn't look happy when you were working at Bluezen."
She frowned. She used to work in the PR department at Bluezen but didn't get to do any actual work. To begin with, she only joined Bluezen to stay closer to Lucas, hoping it would strengthen their relationship.
But he never cared about what she wanted.
He didn't seem to care about what she had to say now either. Just then, a
WhatsApp message notification popped up on his screen.
Probably wary of her, he quickly swiped the notification away.
She got the hint and swiftly looked away.
"Something urgent just came up. Would you be fine with taking a cab to your office?"
Despite sounding like a question, she knew he wouldn't take no for an answer and had no intention of sending her back. It even sounded like he was actively trying to get rid of her.
Evelyn paused for a moment and calmly said, "Sure."
She didn't end up asking him the question that was on her mind.
She didn't get to ask why he came back to Grant Manor last night either.
Something must have happened. Otherwise, he would have stayed with Tiffany instead.
She hastily got out of the car.
A gust of cold wind from the snowfall last night rushed down her collar, so cold that she couldn't help but shiver.
The Bentley she just stepped out of quickly drove away without lingering for long. She wasn't too bothered by the fact that she was abandoned halfway anymore. She pulled her coat tighter, trying her best not to catch a cold and further ruin her already weakened immune system. Bracing against the wind, she managed to hail a cab to take her to Flying Seal Group.
At noon, she had a two-hour meeting with Sebastian and the engineers from the technical department to discuss an idea she had suddenly thought of the day before.
In the end, Sebastian was so excited that he finalized the decision during the meeting itself. Not only was her idea achievable but also unprecedented in its value.
This might even be groundbreaking.
She decided to draft a detailed research and development plan first.
Just then, she suddenly received a phone call from Justine as she headed back to her office.
"Fuck! I need to cleanse my eyes after that! Why won't these shameless bastards just disappear?"
Evelyn could tell she was fuming.
"What happened?"
"I went to an event at Flynn's company today and had to entertain that idiot all morning. I was going to buy some desserts and share them with you when I got back, but guess what? I bumped into Lucas and Tiffany!
"These two went out shopping together, and I even saw her feeding him cake! How could they do something so shameless in public?"
Evelyn's hands slowed down while signing some documents.
A look of sudden realization flashed across her face.
It turned out that the matter so urgent that he had to leave her in the middle of the road was going on a date with Tiffany.
"Evie?" Justine called out cautiously after realizing what she just did.
"Oh, I'm fine." Evelyn snapped out of her thoughts and continued drafting her project plan.
Forcing someone who despised her to fall in love with her had always been against human nature.
Humans were complicated and ever-changing-something she learned from Blake.
And what made Lucas different from that?
"Want to grab a drink with me after work today?" Justine asked.
Evelyn knew she was trying to comfort her. She smiled faintly and asked, "How about you join me and work overtime instead?"noveldrama
Justine ended the call immediately.
Evelyn was relieved by the fact that Justine wasn't too hung up about what happened with Lucas and Tiffany anymore. She understood that Justine could be
a loose cannon that couldn't bottle up her feelings at times.
She sometimes worried that Justine might even charge at Lucas and Tiffany to start a fight.
...
For the next two days, Evelyn was busy in meetings with Sebastian and the team to discuss the project.
Everyone was highly optimistic about her project proposal, buzzing with excitement like they were running on adrenaline.
Sebastian later gave Evelyn a day off to rest.
During her day off, she received a phone call from Leonard telling her that he was planning to go home and stay with Deborah for two days before returning to the sanatorium.
He was hoping she could take some time off from work and come home for dinner with Lucas.
She suddenly remembered that her uncle's birthday was the day after tomorrow. That was probably why he wanted them to come back home.
After much consideration, she thought this was a good opportunity since Leonard and Deborah would be there as well.
She sent Lucas a message. "Are you free the day after tomorrow? It's my uncle's birthday."
After a few hours, he finally replied, "I'm very busy."
She silently stared at those cold three words. She didn't bother asking again.
She finally got to sleep in for once during her day off, only for it to be cut short when she got a call saying Justine got into trouble.
"Evie, I beat someone up..."
