Chapter 48
I was a little surprised to see Samuel suddenly jump in like the good guy.
"What, is he your long-lost daddy or something?"
"Jace Ranford!"
Dr. Grey fumed. "Even Dr. Crowell dislikes you. Why do you offend everyone you meet?"noveldrama
I gave a cold laugh. "If people don't mess with me, I won't mess with them. I'm just standing up for my interests as per my right. Is that wrong?"
I looked at Dr. Grey. He must've forgotten what happened a few years back when
I first joined the hospital. Back then, even as an intern, I managed to get my supervisor reassigned to another department. Now, with years of experience under my belt, why would I be afraid of a mere department head like him?
He was at a loss for words. "Sorry. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions."
I nodded, satisfied. "As long as you all realize that, don't rush to slap a label on someone next time something like this happens. Think it through first."
Dr. Grey widened his eyes, but I just waved him off. "Alright, go on now. There are so many of you crowding my office that I barely have room to stand."
He held back his words, then gave me a long look before leaving. "I've always said that with a temper like yours, it's only a matter of time before you offend everyone."
I smiled faintly. "I don't care."
I graduated from a top medical school. Even if I left this hospital, others would line up to take me in.
Not to mention, I had billions of dollars in family assets waiting to be inherited.
Why would I be afraid of them? That was utterly ridiculous.
After everyone left, Nora looked both relieved and shaken. "Good thing we kept the evidence. Otherwise, we would never be able to explain this. Dr. Ranford, you have it so rough!"
Most doctors went years without running into serious issues, and here I was- repeatedly misunderstood. I was nearly suspended twice in a row. If that wasn't rough, what was?
I shook my head. "I'm just a doctor. My only responsibility is to the patients. Everything else has nothing to do with me."
Now that both incidents had been resolved, I figured things would quiet down for a while.
Tomorrow was Dad's birthday, and I had already asked for a day off. On the morning of his birthday, I got up extra early.
"Aren't we supposed to buy clothes?"
Seeing me lead her into a jewelry store, Kourtney looked a little flustered.
She touched the four thousand dollars in her pocket, dared a glance at the prices, and immediately looked away. Her entire month's salary couldn't even cover a fraction of anything here, let alone the full price.
"How can you wear a proper outfit without matching jewelry?"
"But this place is way too expensive..." Kourtney shook her head and tugged at my sleeve. "I can't afford it."
Seeing her pitiful expression, I smiled. "Don't worry. I'll pay."
"That's even worse. I can't spend your money." Kourtney quickly shook her head, but I held her hand in place.
"You'll be representing me today. If you show up with nothing on you, people will just think my family's poor. That'll ruin my dad's mood. You don't want to leave a bad impression on him the first time you meet him, do you?"
Kourtney shook her head.
"Then try it on."
I picked out a diamond necklace. Kourtney glanced at the price of 1.2 million dollars and shut her eyes in fright.
The saleswoman didn't bat an eye and helped her put it on at my request. "This young lady has fair skin and a slender neck. This necklace looks absolutely stunning on her!"
Kourtney opened her eyes. She had never imagined herself wearing something so valuable.
"She's just a bumpkin from the countryside. Can she even afford that? I'll take the necklace. I'll make the payment right now!"
A voice cut in. When I turned, I saw Casey.
She and Andrew had just walked in. From where they stood, they could only see Kourtney.
What do you think?
