The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 282

With words that cut deeper than the knife in her hand, Evelyn drove the blade through Charles's stomach, leaving only the handle in her grasp. Her eyes brimmed with despair and unbearable heartache. Heartache for her Charlie. Imagining Charlie, even in the afterlife, discovering that her beloved father was the cause of her demise was gut-wrenching.

Evelyn's heart twisted painfully, tears streaming down her face. She looked up at Charles, his face pale and contorted with pain, and with tears flowing, she cried out, "Charles, how could you betray Charlie's love for you like this?!"

When Dahlia had hinted at Charles's involvement, Evelyn had hoped it was a cruel lie, a manipulation aimed to provoke her. Dahlia's phone call, taunting her with Charlie's ashes, and those wicked words that followed had been too much. Evelyn knew, deep down, that Dahlia was playing on her severe depression, pushing her towards the brink.

It was a calculated move to shatter her resolve, to drive her to despair. Her illness, once triggered, would spiral out of control, drowning her in a sea of negativity. It was an assault, almost enough to break her.

But with Charlie's remains clutched to her chest, Evelyn reminded herself not to crumble, not to let Dahlia win. If she gave in, if she took her own life, Dahlia, the one responsible for Charlie's death, would walk free. There would be no justice for Charlie or her grandmother.

How could she allow that? Even if it meant her own end, she would drag the one responsible for Charlie's death down with her. Otherwise, how could she face Charlie in the afterlife?

Evelyn had pushed Dahlia off a cliff and found her way to Charles, hoping against hope that Dahlia's words were lies. She couldn't bear for Charlie to have faced such a brutal truth, even in death. It was a cruelty too great for her sweet Charlie.

"It's my fault, Charlie." Charles was

drenched in cold sweat from the pain. He had known that if Evelynnoveldrama

their daughter's death, she would despise him, perhaps never forgive him But he hadn't expected her hatred to run so deep that she would stab him.

Listening to Evelyn's

heart-wrenching accusations, Charles's eyes filled with tears. Knowing the truth, he was consumed by remorse and guilt. wanted to tell Evelyn it wasn't intentional, that if he'd known it was Charlie's desperately awaited kidney, he wouldn't have given it to Sandy. But he realized that his words would be futile now; Evelyn wouldn't hear them.

No explanation could change the fact that Charlie was gone. His indirect part in Charlie's death was irreversible.

Charles, eyes red, gazed at the woman before him, her face as pale as paper, eyes bloodshot, trembling uncontrollably. She was the picture of sorrow and despair. His role in Charlie's death was the final blow that shattered her.

"Eve, I'm sorry..." His heart clenched violently, and he instinctively reached out to wipe her tears. Her agony was heartbreaking. But before he could touch her, Evelyn recoiled, her face a mask of resistance, as if he carried a deadly virus. She stepped back, and with her movement, the fruit knife slipped free.
