The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 281

Evelyn paused, a sudden realization hitting her-she had already blocked Charles ages ago.

With a quick flick through her phone, she found her way to the blocked list and unblocked his number. Without missing a beat, she hit the call button.

The first ring went unanswered.

She tried again. No luck.

[Dahlia's words replayed relentlessly in her mind: "Do you know where Charles was while you were desperately trying to reach him from outside the operating room? He was at the hospital, just hanging out with Sandy for no good reason!"] ["He saw your calls, Evelyn. Every single one. He just decided not to answer. Not even once! If he had, maybe your little angel could've been saved!"]

Her fingers moved almost automatically, dialing yet again.

Finally, on the fourth try, the call connected.

Charles's voice came through, a mix of surprise and disbelief, "Eve?"

"Where are you?" Evelyn asked, her voice steady and composed.

"What's going on?" Charles asked, setting down his wine glass, a slight clarity returning to his eyes.

"I need to see you. Where are you?" Her voice remained unwavering.

"I'm at Evermore Court. Where are you? I'll send Aiden to pick you up." Charles offered, knowing he couldn't drive himself after having too much to drink.

"Greenwood Cemetery," she replied simply. It was late, and with no cars in sight, she couldn't reach Charles on her own.

Aiden arrived swiftly. Even before the car reached the cemetery, he spotted Evelyn by the roadside.

She was a haunting vision in white, her hair in disarray, her face marked with streaks of blood and tears. The headlights caught her figure, giving Aiden a start.

Evelyn paid him no heed, opening the car door and slipping inside.

Following Charles's precise instructions, Aiden didn't waste any time.

"Ms. Evelyn, should we head to the hospital first?"

"No," she replied, her voice as cold as ice.

Sensing her distance, Aiden kept silent, focusing solely on the drive.

Forty minutes later, they pulled up to Evermore Court.

It was Evelyn's first visit. Aiden assisted her in accessing the building, using facial recognition to gain entry.

He escorted her all the way up to Charles's floor.

As the elevator doors slid open, Charles, waiting anxiously, rushed forward as soon as he saw Evelyn His eyes widened with concern at the sight of the wound on her forehead. "Evelyn, what happened?"

Without answering, Evelyn moved straight into his apartment.

Charles followed closely behind.

Once inside, Evelyn's eyes took in the remnants of Dahlia and Sandy's presence scattered throughout.

Her hands clenched into fists at her sides.

"Why don't you sit on the couch? I'll grab the first aid kit," Charles suggested, oblivious to the storm brewing within her.

He returned with the kit, only to find Evelyn still standing in the middle of the living room.

He placed the kit on the coffee table, gently resting a hand on her shoulder. "Eve, let's get that wound taken care of."

Evelyn didn't budge, her gaze icy as it fixed on Charles.

"Charles, how can you live with yourself after what you did to Charlie?"

His eyes widened in shock.

She knew?

The look on his face confirmed Dahlia's accusations were true.
