Chapter 820
The more Brad thought about it, the angrier he became. His eyes, cold as ice, locked onto Nadine. "Who is Jack?"
He pressed his leg against hers, pinning her down and cutting off any chance of escape. His body hovered over hers, arms braced on either side so he wouldn't crush her.
Realization dawned on Nadine-she had called out Jack's name in her sleep. There was no point in denying it. Brad had heard her. Hence, she openly admitted, "Jack's my ex-boyfriend."
Her words were simple, straightforward—and like a knife to his heart. She had admitted it. She admitted that Jack was her ex. Essentially, she was admitting that she had loved him.
At that moment, Brad felt as if a bucket of cold water had been dumped over him, soaking him from head to toe. His blood went cold.
For a moment, he couldn't bring himself to look into Nadine's eyes. A bitter taste filled his throat, spreading to his stomach, until it seemed like even his core was drenched in bitterness.noveldrama
He felt drained, like all his energy had been sucked out. He also felt deflated, like a punctured balloon. He didn't press further and instead rolled off her, lying flat on his back, staring at the ceiling with an expression shrouded in darkness. "I'm just his replacement, aren't I?"
There was one more question burning on his lips. "Did you ever love me?" But he couldn't bring himself to ask her. If she truly loved him, why would they have divorced?
Instead of responding, she looked at Brad, who was lying beside her, and slowly crawled away from him, heading for the couch. After settling onto the couch, she responded softly, "Yes, I did see you as his replacement."
In reality, she could easily tell the difference between Brad and Jack. Jack had been warm and cheerful like a ray of sunshine that lit up her world Brad, on the other hand, was cold frosty in a way that seeped deep into his bones. His piercing gláre alone could send a chill down one's spine.
There was a time when she had questioned whether the two were related-perhaps even twins. After all, their semblance was uncanny But when she'd asked Sophie, the latter shook her head and smiled. "No way. I raised Jack on my own. If he had any brothers, I'd know."
Brad and Jack might look alike, but their personalities and interests were worlds apart. There were over six billion people in the world, so it wasn't unheard of for two unrelated individuals to share the same face. Hence, she had let the thought go and focused on taking care of Brad.
What she didn't realize was that Brad's true love was Jean. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't reach his heart. Jean had always been the one occupying that sacred space.
After years of effort, she was finally exhausted and decided to let him go. And now, looking back, she didn't regret the divorce one bit.
The room was dimly lit by a single wall lamp, casting a soft glow on the two of them.
Brad shot to his feet the moment he heard Nadine admit to viewing him as Jack's replacement. Without a word, he opened the door and stormed out of the room. The door shut behind him with a definitive click, and the room was plunged into a suffocating silence.
