The Billionaire's Forbidden Longing

Chapter 302 Funeral

Today, a ton of people showed up, mostly to catch the Bennett family drama. Preston had been embezzling public funds and juggling a bunch of mistresses, turning the Bennett family into a joke among Skycrest's elite.

With the crowd and even media reporters expecting a showdown, Allison shocked everyone by naming Cade as the future heir of the Bennett Group. Instead of a fight, the company's stock prices shot up.

Even Declan and his buddies were impressed. "Alexander, Allison is something else!" Alexander watched Allison stand tall. Despite her small frame, she was the backbone of the Bennett family. Cade, too, showed his strength, standing by her side.

"Ms. Bennett, isn't Cade your father's illegitimate son? How did he become your uncle's legitimate grandson? Did you mix up the family tree?" someone asked. Allison looked at the person, expressionless, and said, "What, do the Bennett family kids need your approval? Have you ever seen a Bennett family member make such announcements? Or do I need to show you a paternity test? Jasper lived abroad for years; is it strange he has a son?"

Allison's few words shut everyone up. Cade looked at Allison gratefully; it was his aunt who gave him confidence.

After Preston's death, Hayden fell ill. Allison sent over some medicine, but managing the entire Bennett family on her own was no easy feat, especially with the extended relatives at the funeral trying to push her around just because she was young. "Allison, managing such a big family business must be tough for a girl like you. We're all relatives, and several of our kids are unemployed. Why not bring them into the Bennett Group?"

"Yeah, Allison, a family grows stronger together. The Bennett family has so few members, just Cade as a grandson, and now your dad is gone. You should..."

Allison cut them off, "Should what? Should I, a girl, not manage the company and instead hand out money to you? My dad is dead, but the Bennett family isn't extinct. Those who consider themselves Bennett relatives, attend the funeral, and I'll have someone send you home. If you want to cause trouble, see you at the police station!"

Allison called in security. Anyone who cursed was thrown out. Some filmed videos and started live streams, but soon all the videos and streams disappeared, and the accounts were banned. The reporters were freaked out. "What's going on? Someone can control the internet? That's scary!"noveldrama

Declan was also stunned. "Alexander, did Allison do this?"

Alexander replied, "She can do much more than this. Crossing her won't end well, remember that!"

Declan nodded, making a mental note.

The Bennett family wasn't originally prominent, but Allison's skills made them famous in elite circles. Her quick thinking left many powerful families in awe. "Allison, thank you!" Cade said.

Allison looked at a photo of Preston and slowly said, "He never liked me since I was a kid, often hitting and scolding me. I used to think maybe I was too ordinary, which made my parents dislike me. But even when I became a genius, they saw me as an enemy. Sometimes I wonder if being born into this world was a mistake."

She turned to Cade. "I had you come to the funeral because you're a Bennett. Plus, the fatherly love I never got, he gave it all to you. Whether or not he's your dad, you should be here."

Allison didn't want to dwell on the past; it was pointless.

To her, the Bennett Group's assets were nothing compared to her own wealth.

Cade responded, "Allison, I know you're amazing. I respect you a lot. If I can, I want to be like you!"

Allison looked at Cade, seeing the determination in his eyes-a hunger for success.

"I heard you're good with computers. When we get back to Phoenix City, I'll get you a teacher. Cade, use your skills to protect yourself and your family. That's what a man should do. You're ten now; some life lessons you need to learn on your own. Your mom is still in prison; I'll arrange for you to visit her."

With that, Allison left the funeral home. Standing outside, she watched the sunset turn into a starry night. Alexander came over, draped a coat over her shoulders, and stood behind her.

Allison said, "Alexander, I don't have a dad anymore."

As soon as she spoke, Alexander hugged her from behind. "You still have me. I'll always be here."

The strong, decisive Allison from earlier cried in Alexander's arms.

Even though Preston never acknowledged her, Allison felt a sense of loss. The father she longed to gain approval from had died so unceremoniously, just like his life— always trying to prove himself as an illegitimate child but ultimately failing.

The funeral was grand, giving Preston his final dignity. Surprisingly, Blair didn't attend, which Allison hadn't expected.

After the funeral, Allison took Cade to the prison. Helena had been sentenced to fifteen years. By the time she got out, she'd be over fifty.

Seeing Cade, Helena was emotional. "Cade, you finally came to see me. Where's your dad? Is he okay? Can he get me out?"

Cade looked at Helena in her prison uniform, a stark contrast to the glamorous woman she once was. "Preston is dead. I came back for his funeral."

Helena was stunned, then snapped out of it. "Dead? How? Wasn't he pretending to be crazy? How could he die?"

Helena was furious. With Preston dead, who would save her?

Cade said, "Mom, no one can get you out. You need to stay here and atone for your crimes."

Helena argued, "I did nothing wrong! Why should I atone? Cade, I'm your mom. Do you think the Bennett family will accept you as an heir? Dream on! If I suffer, so will you. You want to go abroad? Cade, can you enjoy life while your mom is in prison?"

Allison, waiting at the door, heard Helena's outburst and walked in. "Why not? Your fate is your own doing, not Cade's. Helena, you helped Preston launder money and embezzle funds. With your greed, didn't you foresee this outcome? You're an adult; you should understand that actions have consequences."
